Brought to you by Ragamala and Pratidhwani, Utsav 2004 is an exciting
first-of-its-kind South Asian music and arts experience in Seattle -- a
fun-filled pageant of music, dance, film and visual arts from the Indian
subcontinent. The past several years have seen steady growth in the
ranks of accomplished performing artists based in the greater Seattle
area. UTSAV will showcase this local talent and also feature
performances from well-known guest artists based elsewhere in the U.S
or Canada.
The four days of festivities will feature performances and workshops by
over 50 local artists and four guest artists. The local performers will
include instrumentalists Raman Iyer (Violin) and Jeff Lewis (Rudra Veena), percussionists Homnath Upadhyaya,
Nandakumar Sankaran and Karthik Gopalratnam, singers Deepa
Bannerjee and Debraj Guha Thakurta, dancers Joyce Paul (Bharata Natyam) and Gargy Banerjee (Odissi), members of
the Sadhana School of Performing Arts, local South Asian pop bands and several others. The featured guest artists for the festival are
Tripti Mukherjee, Reecha Tripathi and Madurai Sundar.

A wide range of events have been planned to appeal to various age groups. For children, there will be exciting daytime workshops on Bharata Natyam dance, puppetry and rhythm. Due to the wide geographical sprawl of the greater Seattle area, events have been planned for both Seattle and Eastside venues to make the events accessible to everyone.
Ragamala and Pratidhwani, two of Seattle’s leading arts organizations have teamed up as the primary movers behind this event. Ragamala needs no introduction for those living in the Seattle area. For over two decades, Ragamala has been bringing quality classical music and dance from the Indian subcontinent to Seattle audiences. Pratidhwani is a vibrant new organization that is committed to cultivating and promoting local talent. Other organizations and entities that have given invaluable support in making UTSAV possible include the Seattle Art Museum, Tasveer films, Northwest Puppet Theater, Sadhana School of Arts, Prabha Rustagi Memorial Trust, and the Ethnomusicology Program at the University of Washington. |
